When Traveling with Infants

The qualities of cruising that make vacationing easier in general are magnified when dealing with a very young child. Parents can easily visit a number of destinations and even a glamorous formal dinner is only moments from their stateroom and they can still bring along their baby and all the paraphernalia baby requires. Agents can partner with maternity clothing stores, obstetricians, Lamaze class providers, spas that offer prenatal and baby massage, etc. to offer babymoon cruises that help couples celebrate parenthood, while acquiring new clients and expanding their databases. The cruise lines provide varied facilities for babies and have different limits on age. The following is a sampling.

Carnival Cruise Lines offers complimentary cribs and highchairs; late night babysitting is available and parents can rent strollers, bouncy seats and travel swings. Babies four months old and older may cruise and babysitting is available at specified times.

Celebrity Cruises has no minimum age requirement for babies, and can provide cribs in the staterooms. Food can be pureed in the dining room, as well.

Costa Cruises has no minimum age requirement for babies on board and offers complimentary cribs and highchairs.

Cunard Line offers complimentary cribs and high chairs along with complimentary Gerber baby food. At the time of reservation, the passengers must indicate how many 8-ounce jars they want. Boxed cereal is available and diapers can be purchased in the onboard shop. Children one year and over can participate in the nursery without parental supervision.

Holland America Line accepts infants aged 12 weeks or older. Through the company's ship services department, a guest may arrange any or all of the following for no fee or a nominal fee: diapers in all sizes, wipes, formula (powdered and soy), crib (complimentary), refrigerator rental, highchair (complimentary), food for infants stages one to three and more (Gerber is the preferred brand if available and selections vary from sweet potatoes; peaches, ham, vegetable and pasta, rice cereal, etc.). While infants may not participate in the regular children's programs for ages' three and above, the ships do schedule toddler time, so parents can come into the kids' areas and play with their infants if they would like to.

Norwegian Cruise Line requires that an infant be 6 months old to cruise. For younger babies, NCL requires a doctor's note that the infant is fit to travel. Once onboard, parents can ask the wait staff for pureed food for infants and toddlers from the galley. Parents have to bring their own jarred baby food, but Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Star. Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Pride of Aloha, Pride of America and Pride of Hawaii all have mini refrigerators in their staterooms. The Norwegian Majesty, Norwegian Dream, Norwegian Wind and Norwegian Crown offer mini refrigerators in select staterooms. Cribs are available and must be requested prior to sailing.

Princess Cruises has complimentary cribs and highchairs available on request and Gerber baby food is available. Passengers must send a request to group services indicating their needs. Royal Caribbean International offers a complimentary crib setup with mattress and sheets. There is no age restriction. They provide cribs in the stateroom and can puree foods in the dining room.

(Note that some airlines won't take babies under 3 months)
